今天Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince终于上市，作者J.K.Rowling的网站自然也就成了香饽饽。去溜了一圈，果然不同凡响。里面有个版块叫Rubbish Bin（text only version here），不由让我会心一笑。
中学里学的都是英式英语，所以习惯了管垃圾箱叫rubbish bin。课本里还教过一个dustbin，不知怎的就牢牢刻在了我脑海里。刚到美国的时候还闹过笑话。记得第一次问人垃圾箱在哪儿是这样的情形：
Me: Excuse me. Where's the dustbin?
Some guy: What?
Me: Where's the dustbin?
Some guy: Sorry. Where's what?
Me: Hmm... Where is the rubbish bin?
Some guy: Oh, you mean trash can?
Me: Yeah, yeah, yeah, trash can. Thank you very much.
之后还有好几次在跟同学聊天的时候讲到垃圾箱，dustbin总是脱口而出（老习惯毕竟难改啊），每次都换来一脸的茫然。没办法，在别人的土地上混，就得讲别人的话。所以经过一段时间的强迫调整，终于彻底改口了。现在看到垃圾箱，第一反应就是trash can。
当然，垃圾箱还有别的说法。建议大家参考Wikipedia的相关条目（最后一张照片很精彩）。特别注意这段说明：
In the American English usage, waste receptacles made of metal are most commonly referred to as "garbage cans" or "trash cans", as the word "can" generally refers to a container made out of metal. The word "bin" or "dustbin" is more ambiguous as to the material used, but is favored (in some regions) if the material is plastic.
顺便提一句，今天在好几份报纸上看到了“我是Harry Potter的忠实fans”这样的话，实在不吐不快。首先，洋泾浜不可取。说难听点就是不三不四，两头不到岸。其次，一定要夹杂点英文的话也至少要用对才行。某人是Harry Potter的fan，某些人才是Harry Potter的fans！单数没s，复数加s，这应该是小学生都懂的常识吧？这个fan/fans不分的低级错误在中文圈内特别常见，我想一定是“粉丝”泛滥的结果。所以拜托大家好好讲英语/中文，改掉恶习，别动不动就来“偶稀饭”、“酱紫”、“期待ing”这类的语言。

身边的工地越来越多了：林立的塔吊也经常让我疑惑，塔吊是怎么从地基向上增高的呢？显然不是使用一个更高的塔吊一节一节搭建上去的。而且很多塔吊本身也是在很高层建筑的施工面上搭建起来的。好神奇啊……

不过和我设想的不太一致的是：塔吊的液压增高是在塔吊操作间的下面，而不是塔吊的地基部分。

1945年7月16日当地时间05:29:45，美国新墨西哥州Alamagordo沙漠，世界上第一颗原子弹爆炸。
之后的故事大家都知道，日本广岛长崎成为核武器的有人实验场。核武器巨大的破坏能力，也间接导致了大国之间的核威慑政策，当大国都能随时让地球毁灭的时候，各自反而都不用核武器了。这样的核威慑有一个假设的漏洞，就是核武器掌握在知道后果的理性领导人手中。如果给恐怖主义者拿到，或者有人发疯，那我们地球人就倒霉了。
鉴于此，世界有核不扩散条约，以及对核门槛之外的国家禁止拥有核武。同时，各国还应该制订清晰的核政策，让世人明白这个国家愿意保持理性的能力以及核武的底线。中国的核政策就是，“不首先使用核武器，不对无核国家使用核武器”。
然而，在纪念世界原爆60周年之际，中国的朱成虎少将却公开挑战了这一既定核政策。
7月15日，《金融时报》、《亚洲华尔街日报》、《纽约时报》纷纷报道了中国国防大学防务学院院长朱成虎少将出席"香港明天更好基金会"主办的一次会议时的讲话。 朱成虎说，“如果美国人使用他们的导弹和导航武器攻击中国领土的目标地区，中国将使用核武器还击…… 如果美国决定干预两岸之间的冲突，中方将坚决作出回应……中国将为西安以东的所有城市遭到破坏做好准备……当然，美国也必须做好准备，美国西岸一百多个或二百多个、甚至更多的城市可能被中国摧毁。”
外电的报道，其实不是朱成虎少将的第一次如此表态，他于2000年就在解放军报发表过同样的意见。
我知道曾经也有人如此“解释”了中国的核政策：尽管中国承诺不首先使用核武器，不对无核国家和地区使用核武器，但中国并没有承诺不在主权范围内使用核武器。既然中国认为台湾是中国的领土范围，那么中国完全有权力在本国领土上使用核武器。（见http://learn.tsinghua.edu.cn/homepage/2000990313/3612wr.htm）
这种解释就是，我不砍你，但我可以砍自己的胳膊。对于这种不把自己的人当人的政策，先不评论，朱成虎少将对外电的公开讲话，甚至把这个“只是自己砍自己胳膊”的解释都推翻了。所谓“回应”是直接针对美国人的，这直接从字面上到实质上都违反了中国的既定核政策。甚至，西安以东，都“做好准备”付出代价了。

We received a couple of comments in response to the recent blog posting which announced the availability of international versions of MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search. Specifically, we were asked “where’s the India version”, and “where’s the China version”. I’d love to say that we took those comments to heart and rushed to prepare new international versions for you, but the truth of the matter is that we’ve been hard at work on expanding the set of international versions for some time.
Our team put a lot of late nights and weekends into this release, and we had people in USA, Ireland, Japan, Korea, China and India working on it.
