Source favicon23:56 A must-see TV archive » Official Google Blog

One of the things that absolutely blew me away when I came on board last year as chairman of the Television Academy Foundation was the Archive of American Television, which is an unequaled collection of videotaped interviews with TV legends.

It's a fantastic resource, and so it drove me crazy that the Archive had over 450 interviews -- but no one could view them if they weren’t actually in Southern California. If a student at a school in Cincinnati or Bangkok wanted to learn more about the history of creative or business aspects of the American television industry, these interviews were just not accessible. So I made it a personal goal to find a way to get the Archive online.

And starting today, anyone in the world can go to Google Video and watch complete and uncut Archive interviews and learn directly from the legends and pioneers on how it all happened. How cool is that?

It’s been 30 years since I was in college, but I can honestly say that if I were just starting out in this business, I would be all over the Archive. I’m such a fan of television that I can’t wait to be able to watch some of the interviews on Google Video – with the men and women who inspired me, and continue to inspire me. One of the Archive legends now online is former NBC head Grant Tinker. Grant helped create “Must See TV” on Thursday nights! There’s also Norman Lear, Ted Turner, Steven Bochco, and so many more. The Archive was created to educate, entertain, and inspire future generations. I challenge you to look up your favorite TV show, learn about a favorite star, or discover more about some of the most important news events of the 20th century. I’m thrilled that the Foundation is finally able to introduce some of these interviews to the world, using the world’s most powerful delivery system – Google. Enjoy!

We have often criticized the way Chairman Mao has become the be-all and end-all of all China-related journalism, and the way every desperate hack relates every possible change and every potential disaster to a ruthless Hunanese heresiarch who died nearly 30 years ago. Still, bearing in mind the fact that we are clearly just as obsessed with him as the rest of the hacks, we may have to change our mind. In any case, any ban on Chairman Mao-related nonsense would mean that we could no longer have a joke at the old bugger's expense.

Anyway, our attention was drawn today to the bulletin board section of the Qianlong web portal, where a patriotic contributor listed 46 reasons why the nation should be proud of the Great Helmsman. The list is, naturally, a mixture of propaganda and preposterousness, of boilerplate and, well, bollocks. Okay, at a stretch, one could conceivably attribute to Chairman Mao the end of warlordism and the unification of a heretofore humiliated nation, but... zzzz. The point is that among the triumphant, exultant responses to the posting, among the tear-stained, lip-quivering references to "the one great man", "the one great man who made the world yearn" and "the one great father who is worth respect" is a little, as yet uncensored yell of dissent:

一个SB

The one Shabi, or stupid c**t, presumably.

Another contributor said that Mao was the leader who turned China into a lunatic asylum, a point proved - you might think - by China's online bulletin boards.

Massage Milk: "Cherish freedom, stay away from blogs

The Chinese version of Microsoft Spaces, along with most — probably all — other Chinese blog hosting services have automatic censorship programs which don't allow users to post "sensitive words".

"Sensitive words" are usually the names of political and religous movements and controversial things that might create instability in China if people say or write them too much. Dodgy things, words.

Below is a rough translation of a blog post called Sensitive Words. The original post is on Massage Milk (按摩乳), which is perhaps better translated as Massage Breast.

The author is Dai San Ge Biao (带三个表), which means 'Wears Three Watches' but is also a play on the words 'San Ge Dai Biao' (三个代表), which refer to Jiang Zemin's famously incomprehensible theory of the Three Represents.

Thanks to Comrade N for sending the link, and this explanation:

Dai San Ge Biao is the pen name of Wang Xiaofeng (王晓峰), a reporter for Life Week (三联生活周刊), and he writes a good blog.

The translation below is by your correspondent. If you spot any errors, please let me know (jeremy -at- danwei -dot- org).

Today I saw a very honest post on Qinglang's blog (that he had copied from somewhere else) called Why I will not build my blog on Sina.com.

I myself was never planning to use Sina's blog platform, but after reading the post I am even more certain that I won't use it.

Nowadays, there are a lot of blog hosts and online forums with something that is really a Chinese characteristic: sensitive words (敏感词).

You don't know whether you should laugh or cry about these sensitive words. Things that were originally not at all sensitive, become highly sensitive things because of these sensitive words. The sensitive words continually remind you: "You better watch what you fucking say: there are some things that you just can't say."

On the one hand we have been prasing Ba Jin [the recently deceased writer] for a consumate hundred year lifetime of telling the truth; on the other hand, we are creating these sensitive words that don't allow us to speak.

Is the speech of ordinary people that terrible? I always remember a sentence from the Selected Works of Deng Xiaoping: "A revolutionary party does not fear the voice of the the masses, it fears the reign of silence."

On the other hand, there are times when you can't just let Internet users do as they please. If there were no controls at all, there would be chaos. The problem is deciding what method to use to prevent the Internet becoming anarchic.

Using sensitive words is a really clumsy, ridiculous and retarded method that does not solve any problems at all. It is like the ears of a deaf person, or the response of an ostrich to danger. It is just self-deception.

Let's suppose you write the following sentence on any blog host that has senstive word controls: "The viewership rating of CCTV's (中央电视台) recent TV series Passing Scenes of Beijing has reached 6.4%". You would not be able to publish this sentence on Blogcn and other such blog hosts because it contains senstive words [i.e. 'central' 中央 which is an abbbreviation for the Central Government].

But has this sentence contravened the Fifth Clause of the Computer and Information Network International Internet Safety Protection Regulations? Of course not. Since it has not broken the rules, why the hell are you depriving me of my rights to free expression?

Furthermore, suppose I write a sentence like this: "We must see through to the essence of cults like Falungong" I imagine almost no blog host would allow this sentence to be published, because it contains sensitive words. You see, even my rights to criticize a cult have been taken away. Are computers fucking stupid, or are people?

If we accept that there must be some controls on Internet content, and we absolutely must use this sensitive words method, why can't they make the list of words public so that everyone knows what to look out for when they write? I think these lists would be very funny, but there is not even one blog host that is willing to make their list public, because if they did they would be spurned by users. Internet users would say: "So that is what you are fucking scared of!" But if they don't publish the lists, it is too troublesome to write because you never know which words will be considered sensitive.

It's like a girl whose whole body is highly sensitive from head to toe. Do you dare to touch her?

Source favicon20:02 谈谈Google Base » WebLeOn's Blog

- Description of your party planning service(聚会服务的描述)

- Articles on current events from your website(网站上关于时事的文章)

- Listing of your used car for sale(二手车出售列表)

- Database of protein structures(蛋白质结构的数据库)

» CNBlog: Blog on Blog

<link REL="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Default RSS1.0 feed"
href="http://www.zhangyining.net/weblog/rss/rss.pl"/>

绝对不会是技术问题,第一,如我上面所说,不是难,而是太容易,只要你提供了那个链接到RSS Feed的桔黄色图标,就能够写一个HTML Link而实现Autodiscovery;

function rsstry(_sUrl)
{
 try{
     new ActiveXObject("SinaRss.RssObject");
     window.open(_sUrl, "_self");
    } catch(e) {
       window.open("http://rss.sina.com.cn/rss_noreader.html");
    }
}

Mousy Li Bingbing

It often seems like China's fashion magazines all collude to put a single model on that month's covers. Sometimes it'll be a wall of broad Hsu Chi smiles, or cover after cover of glamorous photos of Maggie Cheung. True, it's probably just random coincidence. This month's coincidence is Li Bingbing, who appears here on the cover of Digital Fan magazine. Her interview with the magazine reveals she likes shooting DV, and that her favorite piece of music equipment is the iPod Mini.

Li was all over the gossip papers earlier this year after a hotel security camera caught her in an elevator with one of the members of F4. To the dismay of scandal-mongers, however, the situation died down without erupting into a fight between Li and the F's former girlfriend. Of course, what the reading public enjoys only slightly less than scandal is a heartwarming story of a woman standing tall against naysayers who would tear her down; Li made the cover of BQ last month with the headline, "I'm stronger than I imagined."

JDM051026libreast.jpg

Then there's Trends Health, in which Li posed nude with Christy Chung and Wu Junmei as part of the "Love our breasts, love ourselves" Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Prevention Campaign. Celebrity gossip magazine Big Star ran its own cover story on the minor flap stirred up online by this "daring" cover, including a surprisingly substantial interview with the actress, who denied that she was paid big bucks as part of a ploy by Trends to sell more magazines in the name of health awareness.

Li Bingbing shows up on the cover of another Trends magazine, Autostyle, and poses inside in a "Driving is psychological warfare" pictorial. She's also on WomenFriend: Love's November issue, and several other digest magazines that reprint celebrity news stories.

Source favicon02:45 Your Brand » Burn This! - The FeedBurner Weblog

Feeds and feed promotion have become a critical part of content distribution. Along with the growing awareness of syndication importance, more and more bloggers, podcasters, commercial publishers and marketers want to make sure their domain names are associated with their content, and that includes syndicated content within the feed.

Earlier this summer, we introduced a service for customers running their own servers who also have access to their domain name tables. We are relaunching this premium service with a new name, "MyBrand", along with self-signup instructions accessible through the My Account area of the application. MyBrand allows publishers to run their feeds through FeedBurner while retaining their domain names. It's the ultimate in transparency!

As we said about the service when we first launched it: "We now support the ability for partners to point their own domain at FeedBurner, so that the feed and all the related resources (stats tracking, ad spaces, XSL style sheets, everything) will have the partner's URL. This allows all FeedBurner partners to completely control their feeds, making FeedBurner as transparent as possible."

Despite not featuring this service on the site, it has been enormously popular. A number of publishers with highly subscribed feeds are already taking advantage of the service including Daily Kos and Search Engine Watch.

If you are interested in this service AND you run your own servers or have control of your domain name pointers (you'll need to ask your domain registrar about this), you can now sign up for MyBrand. The cost of this premium or "Pro" service is based on number of feeds you have:

In the spirit of overachieving, we will be rollling out more beneficial services before the end of the calendar year. Subscribe to this blog's feed to keep up on the latest.
