Source favicon14:15 The Debate over Net Neutrality » Official Google Blog

The debate over "net neutrality" is coming to a boil in the next week as the House of Representatives is due to vote on a bill that could determine the future of the Internet. The big phone and cable TV companies want Congress’s permission to create a new, unprecedented regulatory bureaucracy on the Internet – a private bureaucracy of broadband monopolists with the power to determine what content gets to you first and fastest. Google believes that forcing people and companies to get permission from, and pay special fees to, the phone and cable companies to connect with one another online is fundamentally counter to the freedom and innovation that have defined the Internet.

Our CEO Eric Schmidt believes this situation is so important that he has written an open letter to Google users asking them to speak out on this issue. We urge all of you to read his letter and call your representative in Congress at 202-224-3121. For more information on the issue, and more ways to make your voice be heard, visit It'sOurNet.org.
Source favicon14:09 City in China = County in U.S. »

What? San Jose is bigger than San Francisco in terms of population? It may be a well known fact, but I just find it out. I keep reading "San Jose is the third largest city in California after Los Angles and San Diego". I was wondering whether San Francisco is not included in California, or have some kind of San Francisco, D.C. arrangement... It turned out San Francisco is really smaller in population than San Jose.

According to Wikipedia:
Rank / City / Population / Land Area (in sq. miles) / Population Density (per sq. miles) / County
1 Los Angeles 3,976,071 469.1 7,876.8 Los Angeles
2 San Diego 1,305,736 324.3 3,771.9 San Diego
3 San Jose 945,000 174.9 5,117.9 Santa Clara
4 San Francisco 799,263 46.7 16,634.4 San Francisco

I am also amazed by how many cities California has - 478 cities. So the term of city in U.S. and China is quite different. City in China is more like county in U.S.

For example the Henan Province in China has 17 Cities, and under cities, there are 159 counties. Counties are under cities. It seems just the opposite of U.S.

The average size of counties is similiar with Henan province, because CA is 410,000 sq. km in area, and Henan is 167,000 sq. km in area. Just FYI, Henan's population is 97,170,000 and CA is 33,871,648.

It is an interesting discovery for me. I realized it years ago when I got to know Redmond is part of the King County, but didn't check it carefully until today.

Source favicon10:51 Your FeedBurner Feed is in My TypePad Blog! » Burning Questions - The FeedBurner Weblog

We've been working closely with our friends at Six Apart to improve the connection between TypePad blogs and FeedBurner feeds, and lo, the integration is complete. Starting today, you can choose to connect your TypePad feed to FeedBurner, thereby taking advantage of all of the subscriber measurement and feed promotion tools that are there for the taking. You can also disconnect your feed from FeedBurner just as easily. Chocolate and peanut butter aside, we think this integration is pretty tasty.

What This Means for You
If you are a current FeedBurner customer publishing a TypePad blog, you can now get the full picture of your audience's size. Subscribers who may receive updates from your native TypePad feed can join the subscribers to your FeedBurner feed to become one big happy family, viewable in its entirety from your trusty FeedBurner charts. (CAUTION: Joining these feeds may cause your subscriber numbers to increase!) New TypePad customers — from individual bloggers to the growing number of Fortune 500 corporations and media companies using TypePad Business Class — can set up this connection during the initial blog configuration process.

Getting Connected
Just log into your TypePad account and select the "Feeds" option from the Configure tab of the application. Six Apart has created a few simple screens that walk you through the drama-free process of "connecting" your feed to FeedBurner. Once you've completed the connection, you can log in to your FeedBurner account to take advantage of all that feed management goodness.

I Have a Question of the Tech Support Nature...
We've put together a nice little FAQ with answers to questions we think you might have. If your questions have more to do with the TypePad side of things, please start with Michael Sippey's post at Everything TypePad. Also, much like New York pizza, our Support Forums are open for business around the clock and the answers you receive inevitably taste better warmed up the next day.

What could be worse than forgetting to bookmark the obscure page you found that maps out the perfect walking tour of Venice? Having bookmarked it on the computer sitting on your desk back at home, 6000 miles away, instead of on the laptop you brought along. Or how about the frustration of being on a new computer and not remembering your passwords because your browser on your old computer automatically filled them in for you?

These sorts of frustrations inspired us to build a Firefox extension that keeps your browser settings for all your computers in sync. Google Browser Sync unifies your bookmarks, history, saved passwords, and persistent cookies across all the computers where you install it. It also remembers which tabs and windows you had open when you last closed any of your browsers and gives you a chance to reopen them. We think you'll enjoy how it handles sync conflicts and "just works," enabling you to bring your browser with you everywhere.

Meanwhile, we've also been improving version 2 of the Google Toolbar for Firefox. We've fixed a bunch of bugs and made it more stable, so we're stripping off the "beta" tag. We'll be updating all Toolbar users to this new version in the next couple of weeks.

The news instant answer will appear on searches for topical news stories.  Keywords are identified algorithmically, updated every few minutes.  It’s impossible to predict which ones will work when you read this, but iraq and george bush are pretty safe bets.

We can also show the top local listings right on our web results page.  This is great when you are looking for a phone number or address of a local business.  You just need to type a category or business name along with a location (city, city/state or zip).  Try our instant answers to find an edison, nj dentist or seattle pizza places.
