Each version of Oracle on each port, is shipped with a preset maximum of how much data can be transferred in a single read (which of course is equivalent to the db_file_multiblock_read_count
since the block size is fixed). For 8i and above (on most platforms) this is 1Mb and is referred to as SSTIOMAX.
To determine it for your port and Oracle version, simply set db_file_multiblock_read_count to a nonsensical value and Oracle will size it down for you.
SSTIOMAX is an internal parameter/constant used by oracle, which limits the maximum amount of data transfer in a single IO of a read or write operation. This parameter is fixed and cannot be tuned/changed
foo@DEMO> show parameters db_file_multiblock_read_count
NAME TYPE VALUE ------------------------------------ ----------- ------- db_file_multiblock_read_count integer 16
foo@DEMO> ALTER SESSION SET db_file_multiblock_read_count =256;
Session altered.
foo@DEMO> SELECT VALUE FROM v$parameter WHERE NAME = 'db_file_multiblock_read_count';
VALUE -------------------- 128

Several new enhancements of note from the Search team: Tomorrow we’re releasing the beta version of Live Search Books (http://books.live.com). Check out the user experience: very clean! With this initial release we’ve focused on making the reading experience as natural as possible.
The U.S. beta launch of Live Search Books is a big step forward in advancing the way people discover information through the integration of content that has been “off-limits” to the traditional Search experience, until now. This release makes tens of thousands of out-of-copyright books available from our library scanning initiative, including books from the University of California, the University of Toronto, and the British Library. In addition, we are announcing new partnerships with the New York Public Library and the American Museum of Veterinary Medicine. The Live Search team is working hard to offer the most relevant Search service to you, our customers. There is a lot of trusted and authoritative content that can only be found in books today. With this beta launch we’ve taken our first steps toward making that content discoverable and easy to read.
The team is also taking this opportunity to announce an update to the beta of Live Search Academic (http://academic.live.com). We’re adding millions of new articles—primarily bio-medical content. Live Search Academic now indexes thousands of academic journals in the computer science, engineering, physics, and bio-medical fields. We’re also now indexing theses, dissertations, and books within these disciplines.
These are just a few of the most recent examples of our efforts to deliver the most relevant content available; whether it is in a book, in an academic journal or on the web. A feedback link will be available shortly; in the meantime, please give us feedback via this blog.

It may be about time to put an end to the debate about whether feeds are going mainstream. Adding to our list of 19th century publishers (they're not our first, or even our third: we checked), The Wall Street Journal Online, the largest paid subscription site on the Web, MarketWatch.com, a leading investing and financial news site, and Barron’s Online, America's premier financial weekly, are now offering enhanced FeedBurner feeds for their sites, blogs and podcasts. Dow Jones has also selected the FeedBurner Ad Network as its choice for monetizing these feeds.
The Dow Jones properties are relying on FeedBurner to integrate with the Web's most popular social media services like digg and del.icio.us using our innovative FeedFlare service. As John Gartner points out on the MarketingShift.com site today, "FeedFlare can include links for many of the Web 2.0 services that can give a tremendous boost to an article's visibility." (That's right: feeds can drive traffic and revenue. Dow Jones just might be on to something here.)
The Wall Street Journal Online currently offers 206 text and podcast feeds, Barron’s Online offers 45 feeds, and MarketWatch.com’s more than 212 text and podcast feeds will be available later this month. Content feeds such as Walt Mossberg’s Personal Technology column and MarketWatch’s Morning Stock Talk podcast feature one-click subscription to popular feed-reading clients like Google Reader or iTunes. WSJ.com even has a feed about holiday sales trends to get you in the spirit.
Is your publication stuck in the 19th century, looking for a 21st century way to drive traffic to your site, generate revenue from your content, and add value for your audience? Contact us. The future awaits.
(Fame and fortune await anyone who wants to guess in the comments who the other 19th century early adopters are. Disclaimer: our lawyers require us to point out that by "fortune", we mean "fame". As in "Internet famous." ...At FeedBurner's headquarters, anyway. No wagering.)
