Blocking the sun on a bus.Riding a bus in Beijing during the summertime is not necessarily the kind of pleasant experience one expects out of mass transit. Even if you aren't worried about tanning your carefully nourished white skin, it can get pretty uncomfortable under the blazing sun. Relief will arrive by 2008, when the remaining half of Beijing's buses will have been fitted with tinted windows. Curtains, unfortunately, are a safety hazard. On Thursday, Beijing's Mirror printed a letter to the editor from a citizen asking why it would take two-and-a-half years to swap out glass or apply tinted film. An excellent question. The Olympics in 2008 seem to provide a more tangible deadline for public projects; 2008 somehow feels more real than either 2007 or 2009. A comparison of Baidu search results for the string "北京xxxx年前" ("Beijing before xxxx") gives 1350 hits with 2008 as the year, 117 with 2007, and absolutely none with 2009. 2010, a rounder, more pleasing number, turns up 180 hits. Other permutations of the phrase lead to similar results. So what all is going to be completed before 2008? Danwei brings you eleven more projects, so including those tinted windows, we have a full dozen things to look forward to before the Olympics.

Pictured is Initial D: The Movie Book (#4), which according to the publisher, contains "a fascinating story, images from the film, dialogue and interviews, and behind-the-scenes tidbits, all in one volume. Also included with Initial D: The Movie Book is a valuable, collectable movie poster." New at #10 is The Basement, the third novel in the "Island" series put out by Guo Jingming's publisher (the second was Finally We Are No One by Luoluo). The author goes by the name BENJAMIN and has published several award-winning graphic novels in recent years. The Basement is the story of rock musicians and their lives and loves. The remainder of the overall bestseller list is pretty much the same as last week's, with the joint history text giving up the top spot to Dan Brown. Most of the academic bestsellers list is made up of translations of foreign books. Harold Bloom's The Western Canon is at the top for the second week, while the remainder of the list contains such varied authors as Jane Jacobs, Ruth Benedict, Jonathan Spence, Raymond Williams, and Machiavelli.

Source favicon09:38 Windows Desktop Search APIs » MSN Search's WebLog

Hello everyone!  This is my first blog entry after joining the team a few months ago.  Like everyone else I have caught the excitement in the work we are doing on MSN Search Toolbar and Windows Desktop Search.  Apparently, it is something that continues to permeate these hallways…

After reviewing the great feedback from partners and customers using our Windows Desktop Search add-ins (RSS feed) we are excited to support more Desktop Search APIs (in beta initially) to do new and cool things with.

Using the Add-ins dev guide, you can now write an application that takes the results from Desktop Search and combines it with information from other sources such as online content.  This allows you to create new mash-ups of functionality that we haven’t even though of yet.  Ooohh, this is very “web 2.0”… ;-)  One new API set can send queries into the Desktop Search product and get back a list of results to display in your own applications and tools.  The same queries that are passed into the Deskbar or Toolbar can be sent in programmatically into the Desktop Search index now.  The ExecuteQuery method is used for this purpose.  A sample has been created with C# to observe the new APIs in action.

If you have a proprietary data format, you can write an add-in that enables Desktop Search to parse your file format or interface with your data store, and then be able to pass queries through to the index for that data type and display results in another application.  This is a great solution for information workers and corporations that deal with specialized files all day long. Also, in this release we created new interfaces have been created to simplify the process of creating protocol handler based add-ins for new stores (such as the Thunderbird store add-in that Citeknet did).  Now, rather than having to tweak a bunch of registry settings and using the command line options of the Desktop Search application, you can use the AddProtocol and AddDefaultUrl methods.

We are always looking to promote those tools, applications and add-ins that all of you have created, so please feel free to add it to our wiki or mail your new add-ins to us. We’ll be watching for innovative extensions and some of them will get promoted to the official site. If you want company while building your extension, stop-by the Channel 9 Add-ins Developer forum or our Developer newsgroup.

Glad to meet all of you and look forward to hearing back on how you like the new functionality!

Source favicon02:56 The platypus of the Internet » Google Blog

It’s surprising what natural selection will produce – for instance, a platypus. How could something with such a seemingly discombobulated set of attributes be fit for survival in the hostile natural world? I had a similar reaction when I first heard about the XUL programming language, used to create the Firefox browser and the plethora of extensions that the Internet ecosystem is creating around it. Strange concept, using JavaScript, which is used to write code that works *in* a browser, to create the browser *itself*. As with the platypus, it’s not until we saw XUL in action that we realized how well suited for survival this product of Internet evolution is.

Not that long ago, the Google Firefox Toolbar team met for the first time - and now we've built the Google Toolbar for Firefox in 10 languages for three operating systems (Windows, Mac and Linux). Self-congratulatory urges aside, we marvel at how well-suited this platypus was to our task. For a small team that had never worked together, or used XUL, to create a product quickly that works across languages and platforms from a single ~250K download - that's good stuff, if you ask me.

In the interest of brevity (already compromised by how long I've gone on), we also tip our hats to the folks at the Mozilla Foundation for making it so easy for us to look good. ;-)

- My Yahoo -- 59.02%

- Bloglines -- 10.42%

- Firefox Live Bookmarks -- 4.20%

- NetNewsWire -- 3.74%

- iTunes -- 3.37%

- iPodder -- 2.38%

- NewsGator Online -- 1.82%

- Pluck -- 1.59%

- FeedDemon -- 1.56%

- Reader not identified -- 1.02%

- Apple CFNetwork Generic Client -- 0.96%

- SharpReader -- 0.86%

- Thunderbird -- 0.82%

- Safari RSS -- OS X Tiger -- 0.61%

- iPodderX -- 0.54%

- LiveJournal -- 0.52%

- NewsGator Outlook Edition -- 0.51%

- RSS Bandit -- 0.50%

- RssReader -- 0.34%

- Opera RSS Reader -- 0.33%

My Yahoo!

Yahoo!

- Bloglines* -- 19.49%

- NetNewsWire -- 10.07%

- iTunes -- 9.53%

- Firefox Live Bookmarks -- 7.25%

- iPodder -- 7.17%

- My Yahoo* -- 6.68%

- FeedDemon -- 4.23%

- NewsGator Online* -- 3.83%

- Reader not identified -- 3.07%

- Pluck -- 2.07%

- SharpReader -- 1.91%

- iPodderX -- 1.77%

- Thunderbird -- 1.75%

- Safari RSS -- OS X Tiger -- 1.75%

- LiveJournal -- 1.44%

- NewsGator Outlook Edition -- 1.27%

- Apple CFNetwork Generic Client -- 1.21%

- RSS Bandit -- 0.99%

- Opera RSS Reader -- 0.90%

- Sage -- 0.82%

相比之下, 用邮件客户端来接收RSS(Thunderbird、NewsGator Outlook Edition)的人数明显要少得多。
