Today Xinhuanet published an article commenting Real Madrid's recent tour of China. The article uses harsh words to describe Real Madrid's performance, especially off the pitch. Right after their first press conference in Beijing, Real Madrid displayed a scornful and arrogant demeanour: after continuosly postponing the press conference at the Great Hall of the People, not even a single member of the players or the crew thought about apologizing. During their stay in Beijing they kept on canceling previously scheduled activities, and having arguments with security guards and fans.[...] In Beijing, Real Madrid made enough bucks, but they ruined their prestige. Dear friends at Xinhuanet, but what do you expect from spoiled and overpayed football megastars and their entourage? MSN Virtual Earth

Will the American right pay attention to Japan's WWII record when it comes to atrocities committed against Brits and Aussies?Powerline is the name of a carefully-written, deeply conservative American blog kept by three lawyers who live in Minnesota and in Washington D.C. Yesterday, one of Powerline's authors, Scott W. Johnson, noted the new book Surviving the Sword : Prisoners of the Japanese in the Far East, 1942-45 by Brian Macarthur in a blog post titled 'Prisoners of the Japanese'. The book is about the treatment of British, Australian, and colonial soldiers captured by the Japanese Army in 1942, and does not especially concern Japanese atrocities in China. Nonetheless, perhaps this book will help to temper the American right wing's unseemly enthusiasm for setting up Japan as a strategic ally against a perceived threat from China. MG Rover: it's going to get eaten by a Chinese company, but which one?On Friday, the Financial Times reported that Chinese auto giant Nanjing Auto had successfully bought MG Rover for £50 million. Today the Guardian questions the success of Nanjing's bid, quoting 'a source' at rival Chinese auto maker SAIC who said that "that the notion of a completed deal was 'moonshine'". SAIC, which stands for Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, was in the news earlier this year when it launched a bid for MG Rover; SAIC eventually backed out deciding that MG Rover price tag was inflated. But if the Guardian article is accurate, it now seems that SAIC has not given up hope of getting at least a part of MG Rover. There is a further complication, because SAIC has already acquired the rights to certain pieces of MG Rover's intellectual property (designs for engines etc.). It seems that this is also causing problems with the Nanjing bid for MG Rover. Both SAIC and Nanjing are massive groups with complicated quasi-statal ownership structures, and in control of hundreds of different companies. As an example, the below is from a Sina.com article on Nanjing Auto: Nanjing Automobile Group Limited Company has 100% ownership of four companies, controlling interests in 24 subsidiaries (of which 8 are Sino-foreign joint ventures), minority interests in 13 companies (of which four are Sino-foreign joint ventures), and more than 400 related enterprises. The group currently has three major manufacturing bases making more than 400 different products for the three big brands Yuejin (which means Leap Forward), Nanjing Iveco and Nanjing Fiat, with annual production being 200,000 vehicles.

昨天和晓良,Gary(客齐集的Gary,而非土豆网的Gary)一起到亿唐举行一场小型技术交流。

Betty gives lazy cooks a fake book.Is anyone surprised that Harry Potter #6 is tops this week? It takes two slots, no less, with the British and American editions coming in at #1 and #2 respectively. And the first volume in the series is at #6 on the children's list, despite having been available in a 5-yuan pirated edition for years. Also recently pirated is the jointly edited History of Three East Asian Countries (#8). The editions that I've seen available in bookstalls have been pretty low quality, with badly photocopied illustrations set against OCR-ed and reprinted text, but the very existence of illegal copies speaks to the popularity of the book. People are buying it, at least. At the top of the Lifestyle Bestsellers list is a new cookbook - Betty's Kitchen: Good Food for Lazy Cooks I - that promises 60 tasty dishes to satisfy the appetites of people who don't really want to cook. The Betty's Kitchen brand, part of a joint venture set up by Ringier AG out of Switzerland, includes a popular cooking magazine and a television show. And now a line of cookbooks. Check out that spiral binding!
