Oh My God, we got Ray Ozzie"。

BS(浏览器-服务端)架构开始流行。

Editors sacked and The Beijing News in enemy hands?

From Chinese news and politics blogger Anti:

"The Beijing News falls into hostile hands — completely taken over by Guangming Daily."

In addition to that snippet of information, Anti posted the image reproduced here. The three people are identified as Editor in Chief Yang Bin, and Vice Editors in Chief Sun Xeudong and Li Duoyu. The character for 'out!' or 'sacked' is superimposed on their portraits.

The Beijing News (新京报)launched on November 11 as joint venture between the Guangming and Nanfang Newspaper groups, targeting the high-end newspaper market. The Nanfang Group was once seen as the standard bearer for journalistic independence in China, although recent purges have rid the group of many of the more turbulent editors.

In May this year, ChinaPR.com.cn reported rumors that Beijing Media Corporation was going to buy the The Beijing News, but nothing came of it, and there was no word on the street about the machinations behind Beijing's snobbiest newspaper, until the news Anti reported today.

Commentors on Anti's blog have written the following about the matter:

- Where did you get this information?

- Shit!

- It seems that our Party does not like anyone named Yang Bin being a boss

- The South (i.e. Southern or Nanfang group) loses its Northern Campaign

- Bound to happen sooner or later...

The Mediterranan and the Mditerranean World in the age of Phil ip II的大部分篇幅,他后来说,这是“a direct existential response to the tragic times I was passing though”。

最最著名的故事就是关于Leray(勒雷)的事情,他是法国Bourbaki(布尔巴基)学派的创始人之一。

还有一个关于S.Lie(S.李)的传说,这个人就是李群的那个Lie(S.李)。

A more caring State Council Information Office?

About two weeks ago, the 2005 Beijing Gay and Lesbian Cultural Festival — a weekend of gay-themed activities — was stopped by the police.

Blogging filmmaker Beijing or Bust posted the following report:

[11:00am] Received a text message from my friend Bill that the first gay & lesbian cultural festival has changed venue...

...[3:00pm]
Bill had called a hotline and found out that new venue is On/Off, once THE weekend gay partying destination but now a distant runner up after the new gay bar Destination. Told him I will be there at 7pm for the opening speech by Li Yinhe, the famous scholar and writer on contemporary gay and AIDS issue in China...

...[5:15pm]
Bill just called. He went to On/Off at 5pm for the opening cocktail party. But the police closed down On/Off. He said the entire group of people there, about 50 to 60, were going to have a hotpot dinner. I asked why the police closed it down. He wasn’t sure...

...[7:50pm]
Walking with Bill to a different restaurant to meet friends for dinner. Just passed On/Off. On the door a poster had been put up to announce “Temporarily Closed to Fix Plumbing”...

The end of the Gay and Lesbian Culture Festival did not affect the weekend's gaynightlife. Beijing or Bust describes the scene at Destination:

After a few drinks my eyes started to blur. The gay man I had planned to interview was chatting with his very cute and very young “friend”. A couple of gay punks with their hair dyed blond danced cheek-to-cheek in front of me. A business-type in a very nice dress jacket was squeezing his way into the dance floor with his two handsome assistants. A group of young and trendy guys occupied a corner, barely moved their hips and looked at the dancing crowd with a slight disdain. Student types were hopping up and down like crazy. Fag-hags were smiling their big smiles. And standing in the corners in 2s and 3s, dressed in the latest street fashion, were the money boys who were straight but making a living with the gay renminbi...

...The DJ started playing Madonna’s new song, Hung Up. The crowd got denser on the dance floor. I shook my hips and scanned the crowd and a sense of joy overwhelmed me – the cage has been broken; no matter how much the authority wants to control public discussion, no matter how much cultural pressure there still exists, and no matter how many problems there are with the evolution of gay life in Beijing – commercialism, AIDS, prostitution, etc., the freedom expands and like many other trends in China, can no longer be reversed.

At the same time as all of this was going on, the state-owned weekly Beijing Review published an issue with the front cover pictured above — Accepting Alternative Lifestyle. The magazine contains a feature story about gay life in China, complete with a vocabulary guide:

Pocket Dictionary of China’s Homosexuals

- Tongzhi (comrade): used by Chinese gays and lesbians to refer to themselves
- 1: refers to the male role in a gay relationship
- 0: refers to the female role in a gay relationship
- T: refers to tomboy, or the male role in a lesbian relationship
- P: stands for the Chinese Pinyin po, or the female role in a lesbian relationship
- 419: used to indicate a one night stand
- MB: money boy, normally known as male prostitute
- Uncle: a respectful title for older tomboy

It is worth noting that Beijing Review is owned by the state-owned China Publishing Group, and is under the direct control of the State Council Information Office, for which it has been publishing propaganda since 1958.

The message from the government is quite clear: be as gay as you want, just don't try to organize a large group of people to get together and talk about it too loudly.

The Forbidden City is officially and blandly known as the Palace Museum. The story of how it became a public museum during the chaotic first half of the China's 20th Century is the subject of the latest issue of the online magazine China Heritage Newsletter, produced by the Australian National University.

This corner of Chinese history is illuminating for a number of reasons, but perhaps best summarized in the China Heritage Newsletter thusly:

Chinese politics remained highly fluid during the years following the 1911 Revolution: warlords were in the ascendancy in Beijing; the victory of the revolution was far from decisive, and the presence of the abdicated emperor lent weight to the possibility that the monarchy could readily be restored.

Many of the politicians and other individuals who facilitated the establishment in 1914 of the Government Museum (Guwu Chenliesuo, renamed the Neiwubu Guwu Chenliesuo in 1916) were motivated primarily by the need to occupy the palace space, specifically the ceremonial halls of the outer court and thereby thwart any restoration of the monarchy.

Source favicon10:23 In defence of Beijing's dirty words » Danwei RSS 1.0

Chinese blog Massage Milk has posted another classic, defending Beijing's famous filthy language against people saying that the capital's enthusiasm for swearing will give China a bad image. Below is a rough translation:

Recently, some media have been worrying about jing ma [Beijing style swearing and the constant sound of profanities you hear if you walk around Beijing], saying that if spectators at the Olympic Games constantly hear Beijingers cursing, it will be very embarrasing. Therefore, there are people calling for an elimination to Beijing swearing before 2008.

This is a typical Chinese way of thinking, and also a typical example of Chinese people acting as if everything is OK, even when it really isn't.

You hear the leaders are coming for a visit, so you quickly clean everything up. You hear guests are coming, so you suddenly tidy up your house. What the hell are you doing the rest of the time?

Sometimes, daily habits and culture are the results of a long period of accumulated experience.

If you take Beijing swearing as an example, you actually only need two characters to explain it: stupid cunt (sha bi). Don't pay attention to the fact that these two characters may seem a little vulgar, because they actually conceal several generations of Beijingers' wisdom.

Chinese has two slang expressions that I think are profound: one is "fuck! (wo cao, literally 'I fuck', sometimes closer in meaning to 'fuck me!'), one is "stupid cunt" (sha bi).

There'a an old story about a world story-telling competition. The winner is the one who can use the fewest words to tell the most complicated story. In the end, the winner was a Chinese guy. This guy told a story about riding a bicycle up a mountain to look at the scenery, and then having an accident. The whole story only had two words "Fuck me!" (wo cao).

If you have seen the film In the Heat of the Sun, you might remember Ma Xiaojun warching his teacher through the telescope, repeating again and again one phrase: "Fuck me!" (wo cao). But each time he says it, because of differences in the tone, stress and length of the vowel sound, it means something completely different. The phrase can mean many different things, depending on how it's said. This is, in fact, culture.

Sha bi and wo cao can both mean very different things according to the tone in which they are pronounced. Because of the frequency of their use, these words are often used as modal particles, gradually merging into Chinese grammar like de and di. If they suddenly disappeared, the language would not hang together.

Words express people's feelings, and are tools for exchanging information. Sha bi and wo cao are words that best express Beijinger's feelings. It wouldn't be easy to stop the use of these words unless you can find another two suitable words to replace them...

...If you think that Beijingers are not civilized, then don't hold the Olympic Games in Beijing! Beijing has always been a country bumpkin city, as I have said many times before. The city has not yet progressed to a state of refinement. If you want foreigners to understand Beijing and understand China, then you should let them know a Beijing that has not been painted like the grass that sometimes gets sprayed with green dye, they should see the city in its real colors. Whatever is bad about it, it is the real Beijing.

There are many, many uncivilized things in Beijing. If a city is full of sha bi things, why the hell do you want to stop people calling out sha bi? The people have sha bi rights!

If one day this city solves all of its sha bi problems, then perhaps you won't hear Beijing swearing.

Think about it: with such sha bi looking Olympic mascots, why the hell can't we scream out sha bi when we attend Olympic events?

Source favicon06:30 Blogger Hack:Meta Data优化 » WebLeOn's Blog

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="WebLeOn's Blog RSS" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/FeedName" />

Blogger
<MainPage><title><$BlogTitle$></title></MainPage>
<ArchivePage><title><$BlogPageTitle$></title></ArchivePage>
<ItemPage><title><Blogger><$BlogItemTitle$></Blogger> - <$BlogTitle$></title></ItemPage>

Not long ago, I walked by the desk of software engineer JJ Furman, and saw that he had made an interesting addition to his desk: a large blob of Silly Putty, about the size of a grapefruit. Intrigued, I asked how he'd gotten so much of the stuff. The answer? A bulk order directly from the manufacturer! Of course.

I knew then that I wanted some, and it dawned on me that I probably wasn't the only one. So I set out to place a really, really big bulk order. An email went out to cohorts. Their orders came in. Three weeks later, I had an eighth of a ton of Silly Putty delivered to my desk.

Naturally, we were all curious to see what 250 pounds of Silly Putty would look like, so before distributing the stuff, we put it all in a single pile to see. Huge mistake.

The problem was that once together, Silly Putty doesn't like to come apart, and none of us had any idea of how to deal with this effect. We tried everything: very strong people (didn't work), scissors (stabbing worked, slicing didn't), 28-gauge steel wire (broke), 22-gauge steel wire (broke), 16-gauge steel wire (too thick), and twisting and breaking (worked well for "smaller" pieces -- under five pounds, that is.)

Two hours later, with the help of more than a dozen enthusiastic Googlers, everyone was finally able to walk away with a giant piece of Silly Putty.

And then what?
Some people are giving it for holiday gifts. Others are using it to exercise their arms, play basketball (rebounds are tough), and of course, imprint entire newspaper pages.
