上周学院 blog 圈里有件事情值得一提，芝加哥大学的助理教授 Dan Drezner was denied tenure，意味着他将不得不走人。保留英语，是因为我不知道如何翻译。关于什么是tenure，being denied 具体意味着什么，参看这篇文章：美国高校的一些知识。而大约半年前，另一个芝加哥大学的助理教授 Sean Carroll 也经历了同样的事情。他现在还在blogging，他就是 Cosmic Variance 的 Sean。 这些事件引起了很大反响，是因为他们都是很出名的 bloggers，从相关帖子下的回响数量就可以看出来。但是评价一个学者是不是干得不错，和他的blog受不受欢迎，Google PR 多高，都是没有关系的。或许将来会是，但现在不是。但在别的一些领域和职业里，个人的Blog已经举足轻重，比如 keso，他的公司如果想以任何理由解雇他，都该慎重吧。

第一部分：

- Technorati所跟踪的Blog数量达到1960万个。

- Blog总数继续以每5个月翻一番的速度增长。

- 整个Blogosphere的规模是3年前的30倍，增长势头不减。

- 每天新建Blog的数量约为7万个。

- 大约每秒钟就会产生一个新的Blog。

- 每天产生的新Blog中，有2% - 8%是Fake Blog或者Spam Blog。

- 每天产生的新Blog文章大约为70万到130万之间。

- 每小时产生的新Blog文章数约为33000条，每秒钟9.2篇。

- 另有5.8%的文章(约50000篇/天)产生自Fake Blog或者Spam Blog。

Goowy是一个基于Flash的动态个人信息服务，它刚刚进行了改版，并对服务进行了不小的升级。



首先，其为每个用户提供的存储容量从100M增加到了2000M。虽然目前这些空间只能用来储存文件，不过Goowy即将提供文件储存服务，这2G的空间能够真正的被用户完全利用。



同时Goowy还推出了一个桌面客户端软件，使用户可以不打开浏览器就能访问Goowy的服务。目前这个客户端所支持的功能包括Email/Calendar提醒、Google网页/地图搜索、IceRocket搜索、RSS阅读、Flickr浏览等等。Goowy Desktop的界面风格类似Mac操作系统，包含了一个类似苹果Dock停靠栏的控制面板，而其功能模块也非常像Konfabulator。



越来越多的网络服务开始在浏览器之外的用户桌面上寻找自己的位置，Google Desktop、Yahoo Konfabulator、Goowy Media，不一而同。Web 2.0的中心要义之一就是“Web as Platform”，桌面网络化或者网络的桌面化，是不是也算Web2.0的一种趋势？

Ba Jin (Li Yaotang), the Esperanto-speaking novelist whose pen name was taken from Russian anarchist Bakunin, has died. Ba Jin's life spanned the 20th century and he wrote about and participated in some of the most important events of the last hundred years. He went to France to study in 1927, he wrote anti-Japanese propaganda during the war and he was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution.

Ba Jin's writings include Miewang (Destruction), Nahan (Outcries), later renamed Fenghuo (Beacons) — written with Mao Dun, and Zaxiang Lu (Random Thoughts).

Experts and scholars who study Sino-American relations are following closely the aims of this visit, the possible subjects Rumsfeld will discuss with Chinese leaders, and the significance of the visit.

There are even experts who say that as one of the most powerful representatives of the American "hawks", Rumsfeld's visit to China this time is not ordinary; at a time when there are great frictions betweeen the U.S. and China and continuously occuring small frictions, this visit highlights the importance of Sino-American relations, and the hope of both sides that the relationship could enter a new climax (i.e. high point).

This just in: Walid Elias Kai, a Ph.D. in search engine marketing, is, it must be said, an avid fan of our company. Dr. Kai, who is Lebanese, and his Swedish wife Carol live in Kalmar, Sweden, where their son was born on September 12. His name? Oliver Google Kai.



About this choice, Dr. Kai writes, "When we first knew that my wife Carol is pregnant, I said, 'we will name our child Google.' Everyone laughed and did not take me seriously. My brother said, 'Yeah, name the next one yahoo fuji nikon." And then, says Dr. Kai, the day came to make the baby official in the Swedish Registry. "I was with my friend Magnus Foss and my wife Carol, and I said yes, GOOGLE KAI. Carol knew how serious I am – she knows how much I adore Google services."



Clearly not one to shy away from a unique moniker, Dr. Kai also tells us that in the Lebanese tradition both parents have a name related to the child. "All our friends and families are calling us Abou Google (Google's father) and Emm Google (Google's mother)."



Of course, there's a website devoted to young Mr. Kai. We wish him long life and good health, and hope his schoolmates aren't too hard on him.

今天网友Fox在博客留言中提及我翻译卫报本杰明事件解释的一个小错误。我译文写道：
 
我和本杰明也谈过，主要是在两个小会上。经过三个多小时，我确信是有必要停止对他的大规模谴责了，虽然看上去应该。本杰明已经无数次为他所做所为、和牵连到卫报乃至中国民主运动的影响而道歉：“这种情况，这是我一生中第一次真诚地认为，我该死去。”
 
但是，Fox正确地指出，原文是This was a situation in which I honestly, for the first time in my life, thought I would die. 应该翻译成“那种情况，是我一生中第一次真诚地认为，我会死。”Fox 显然是对的。
 
问题是，我为什么会把would翻译成should？我想了想，明白了。对于一个中国人说，如果一个人无数次为他所作所为造成的坏影响道歉的时候，道歉的内容会是什么？是“当时的确我担心会死”，还是“我真想死了算了”更能打动听众获得原谅？当然是后者，也就是在这种潜意识中，我也产生了非专业的“本杰明幻觉”。再看更正后的译文：
 
本杰明已经无数次为他所做所为、和牵连到卫报乃至中国民主运动的影响而道歉：“那种情况，是我一生中第一次真诚地认为，我会死。”
 
是不是从中国人的眼中看，这样的道歉是很弱的？但是在卫报编辑们和卫报读者眼中，这种道歉是很能打动人的。
 
我和一个老外朋友Greg讨论这个事情。中国人似乎对个体的责任苛求胜于西方。Greg说，对于大部分西方人来说，没有什么人是“该死”的，这也是西方人反对死刑的原因。而中国人，在情急之下，都会以死铭志，哪怕只是在口头上。
 
大家看过北村的小说《玛卓的爱情》吗？这是一篇能让中国人看了精神恍惚的作品。里面有首男主人公的诗，让我至今难以忘怀：“难道你头颅里的家乡，一定要我用死亡来到达？”
 
本杰明事件过去了。我也应该检讨我对本杰明的个体苛责。我们也应该学会西方人的宽容，对纯粹是人的软弱的部分应该原谅它。希望本杰明在医生的帮助下，能重新做一个好记者。而中国的新闻人们，应该努力冲破封锁，主导我们自己事业的报道。因为这个国家首先是我们的，我们更加负有不可推卸的责任。
