To become obsessed with a certain song for a period of time, listening to it on repeat for hours until you finally become annoyed with it.

To binge on a song or artist. The act of repeatedly and obsessively listening to a particular song or artist over a relatively short period of time. Periods of song binging are followed by extended periods of skipping the certain track or artist, leaving them unplayed.

我就经常会出现这种情形。碰到一首喜欢的歌,反反复复翻来覆去地听,如果是有MV的,我还会连带着看N遍MV。

一直觉得应该有个专门的词形容这种行为。能发现song binge这个词真让我心满意足,实在太贴切了。 :)

2. One the greatest impediments to applying queueing theory models (whether analytic or simulation) is the inscrutibility of service times within an application. Every queueing facility in a performance model requires a service time as an input parameter. No service time, no queue. Without the appropriate queues in the model, system performance metrics like throughtput and response time, cannot be predicted. The universal law of computational scaling leapfrogs this entire problem by NOT requiring ANY low-level service time measurements as inputs.

今天是网络创业盛会TechCrunch50开幕的日子,也是DEMO老牌创业盛会开幕的日子。Mr.6有篇贴子讲了关于这两个会议的八卦故事。

網路創業盛會TC50與DEMO Fall本週同步上演大對槓,誰贏?

首先來看看雙方去年號稱的參加人數,據TC40的記錄,去年他們一場就有 1100位觀眾,其中800位真的付了2500美元的超昂貴門票費,單單門票一場就得250萬美元,還要加上贊助廠商等等。而DEMO這邊則有700位付費進入的觀眾,門票費為3000美元,若再有些網站公司真的付了18500美元搏一上台機會,賺得絕不比TC少。至少比目前來看,還沒有衰退的跡象。

那是去年,但今年的狀況呢?雖然矽谷的網路人大多都看好TC50,但矽谷的網路人不見得代表全部的網路。這點尤可從媒體參加狀況略知一二,據CNET這篇文章說,目前看起來,可確定的是DEMO已經贏得傳統媒體的青睞,高達100多間正式媒體會派人到聖地亞哥,其中華爾街日報等等據說只去DEMO,不去TC50。但是,TC50顯然吸引了更厲害的媒體──網路部落客們,五大部落客幾乎都以TC50為重心。當然,仍有媒體如CNET、Wired、BusinessWeek,會派出兩組人馬出來。

最趣味的是,單看這些派兩組人馬的媒體就可以隱約察覺一般人對DEMO與TC50看法的差異。像BusinessWeek,就是派他們的電子媒體記者到TC50,紙本媒體記者則到DEMO。換句話說,服務年輕及重度網路使用者讀者的記者就到TC50,服務資深與輕度網路使用者讀者的就到DEMO。對他們來說,兩者都不錯,但兩者也都有缺點,DEMO 的缺點就是剛剛說它是付費上台,所以上台這些公司不一定是當年最棒的公司(窮網站可能就上不去了),而TC50的問題,則是它太TechCrunch個人風格,雖掛著「公平」的招牌,但仍被把持在幾個人與幾個組織的手上,當然TC50本身仍處於剛起創的非常時期這樣做也是對的。

and we are going to implement some of them.
My favorite one is - make InnoDB files .ibd (one created with –innodb-file-per-table=1) movable from one server to another, however it is sort of challenging.
Probably next one patch we want to integrate is Google’s smp-fix or Yasufumi’s rw-locks (we are going to test both before)

Stefan Esser recently warned developers of the dangers of SQL Column Truncation and the weakness of mt_rand().  With his help we worked around these problems and are now releasing WordPress 2.6.2.  If you allow open registration on your blog, you should definitely upgrade.  With open registration enabled, it is possible in WordPress versions 2.6.1 and earlier to craft a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly generated password.  The randomly generated password is not disclosed to the attacker, so this problem by itself is annoying but not a security exploit.  However, this attack coupled with a weakness in the random number seeding in mt_rand() could be used to predict the randomly generated password.  Stefan Esser will release details of the complete attack shortly.  The attack is difficult to accomplish,  but its mere possibility means we recommend upgrading to 2.6.2.

Other PHP apps are susceptible to this class of attack.  To protect all of your apps, grab the latest version of Suhosin.  If you’ve already updated Suhosin, your existing WordPress install is already protected from the full exploit.  You should still upgrade to 2.6.2 if you allow open user registration so as to prevent the possibility of passwords being randomized.

2.6.2 also contains a handful of bug fixes.  Check out the full changeset and list of changed files.
